Sporting Car Occasionals

Where I used to work in air traffic control near Heathrow there were a group of us who owned various MG's so I organised a run up to the old MG offices in Abingdon. Word spread around friends so there was quite a few of us in the end which everyone seemed to enjoy.

Having come up with the name Sporting Car Occasionals I organised an annual run for several years. Once to the transport museum at Gaydon, another treasure hunt ending at a small museum near High Wycombe and the final event which was a reliability run starting at the Phoenix pub in Hartley Wintney, each team had to guess what their average speed would be over the route I had planned. they set off at one minute intervals. The finish was at Popham airfield where we had an autotest followed by a barbeque.

We were attracting quite a lot of cars by this stage, even having a report in a classic car magazine. The police turned up at Popham before the first arrival to ask what was going on! So we decided to halt the annual run although a few of us did start to tour abroad (see Germany).

We've revived the name Sporting Car Occasionals for an annual trip 'sur le continent' with myself and Jake driving our Mini and MG Midget and our friend David in his Triumph Herald. See the trips 'Le Mans Classic' and 'Montlhery'.
